Jewish Lives Matter
It's been a long time since I had something to say, but today, well, now I do.
Recently, Democrat Representative Ilhan Omar decided to tell the world that it's all about the Benjamins...and the Daniels...and the Josephs...and, well, Jews.
In response to this outrage, did the Democratic Party condemn her words?
Nope!
They didn't?! Well, did they condemn anti-Semitism?
Nope!
Say it ain't so! Well what *did* they do?
Well, they initially drafted a resolution condemning anti-Semitism, but, amazingly, some of them protested this, as they feared it might be viewed as Islamophobic because it was triggered by the words of Ilhan Omar.
Ilhan Omar's faith is irrelevant to the resolution. She could be a Christian, Buddhist, Jainist, Taoist, Bahá'í, Atheist, or Sikh, and the resolution would be just as appropriate. The idea that a resolution condemning anti-Semitism is Islamophobic puts forth the idea that Islam is inherently anti-Semitic.
Now the resolution that was triggered by a specific incident of anti-Semitism is being watered down and turned into a general condemnation of bigotry. Bigotry of all sorts is both stupid and wrong, but given that this came up because a member of congress has exposed themselves as a bigot against a particular group, it seems appropriate that the specific type of bigotry she expressed should be specifically noted as being unacceptable.
Maybe there should be a 'congressional non-bigoted caucus'?
Maybe it would be easier to get the house to issue a resolution that states support for the group that was attacked. This is especially true since the group in question has more hate crimes per capita than any other and has historically been hated more than any other group. Here's the idea for you, Speaker Pelosi - all you have to do is pass a resolution that says:
